They were probably the last group of people/civilization to live in the Bronze Age in Ancient Greece. Their government was a monarchy which means that they had a king as a ruler. Their cities were built up on hillsides and mountain like places with walls around their cities so they were protected and could spot enemies and intruders easily. This was a very smart way of keeping their cities safe. The Mycenaean’s were one of the first civilizations to have a sufficient army of some sort. This was because the people were very experienced sailors and used their ships as weapons and protection. As a result of their good army and sailing experience, they took control over the Aegean Sea. Their society unlike the Minoans that relied on trade relied on conquest.

Review Test Questions

Today in Human Geography class we looked at the review test and Mr. Schick told us what questions were on the test and which ones were not and it helped us out alot. Each student was at a table with many different artifacts and gave us short presentations on what was on the table and how those artifacts were used. It was really interesting because they were actual artifacts from indians and Mr. Scholl made some of them. He made many indian shoes that he made that took him about 1 year to make. I learned alot about different things that indians used and it was really interesting to see all the different cultuarl aspects of the indians life. Happy Birthday :) so we continued to watch the movie and i was able to then answer question 9. 10 cannot yet be answered. Question 9 follows.......

9. The boys do not know much about food and do not know what some of the things are. The boys are lonely because they are not used to living with only a few people. It is hard for them to afford college and other things. When the boys arrive in the United States, it is very exciting for them but over time it can be sad. They are satisfied about sleeping well and having plenty to eat, but they get lonley a lot of the time because they were so used to living with hundreds of people in one village and now it is only about 3-4 of then in an apartment. They don’t see each other a lot because they are always working different shifts and sometimes don’t see each other for a week because they are working so much. It is a much better life in the U.S. for them but they are not used to the people and their personalities of the people. They are not a friendly her as they were back in Kenya.

Sudan Video in Class :) awesome video!

Today in Human Geo Class, we watched a movie on The Lost Boys of Sudan. We have not finished it but I am very excited to finish it :) it was very interesting and probably my favorite movie i have watched in class that was educational...... so here are the questions we were asked to answer while watching this movie.

1. Nichole Kidman
2. Sudan- Ethiopia- kakuma, Kenya-
3. Panther, John, Daniel
4. one that flees; especially : a person who flees to a foreign country or power to escape danger or persecution
5. ?
6. Lost boys of Sudan
7. Start in Sudan(Home Village)- travel/flee to Ethiopia-Are then moved to Kakuma, Kenya.
8. These people have fled from their country because of war and have no place to go. They have been chassed out of their villages and homes, many of them were burned, force sterilized, or killed in other harsh ways. They have gone to camps where they are safe but there is little food and water at these places, and many starve to death. These people have moved many times from place to place so they are safe or because of governmental issues. The people that were fortunate enough to be chosen to come to America have never heard of or have experienced electricity, shower, butter, electronics, etc. Our live compared to these people are very different and I feel very fortunate to have the life I am living now.

9-10 cannot be answered because we have not yet finished the video. :)

human Geo class was good :)

Today in class we looked at a map of africa and started to fill it in. These include, Carbon Dioxide from Power Plants, Carbon dioxide emitted from cars, carbon dioxide emitted from planes, carbon dioxide from buildings, Methane, Nitrous oxide, deforestation, etc. Most of these are pollutants which is one of the main problems with global warming. One main factor of global warming is the greenhouse effect. In the atmosphere, there are 4 main greenhouse gasses, Methane, Carbon Dioxide, CFC, and Nitrous oxide. Without these gasses, we would freeze and die because these gasses make the earth warm and able to survive on. There is a picture below this paper to show how this really works. Because of all the factors listed in the second sentence of this paper, thousands of scientists known as the intergovernmental panel on climate change have concluded that humans are 90% responsible for global warming.

Class depression :(

So today in class I discovered that i did not do so well on the last test we took but it was because I was sick te day before the test and i did not have my book >:o so i did not get such a hot score, but i am doing the extra work thingy to get my grade up because if i am ineligable i will not be able to do the plays and i am already failing another class too!!!! :/ So i listened in class today and I already have the recipie picked out that i want ot do for the tuesday food thingy. This deals with the people and economy in North America are developing through globalization. North America is very lucky to have so many natural recourses available for them to use. These recourses and raw materials include our climate and biological diversity, soils and terrain, our abundant energy, metals, forests, etc. North America has an extremely efficient agricultural system of production. It emphasizes the efficiency of transportation systems for food, global markets, and large capital investments in farm machinery. Agriculture is critically important of North American Economy. More than 15% of agricultural wealth comes from Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska. North America produces about 12% of the world’s oil, but we use about 25% of oil in the world. Most of our oil is from the Middle East, Africa or the Americas. Our most abundant fossil fuel is coal.

Connectivity has a big impact on the economy of North America; this means that our locations are linked with each other through transportation and communication structure. Technology is very advanced in North America. We have the use of transportation systems such as automobiles, air travel, trains, etc. This has helped us globalize throughout the years. North America is a very globalized nation and has advanced greatly throughout the years.

Re-test relife

Today in human geograph, Mr. Schick let us finish up our tests. It was very interesting to hear what our ideas were on the hurricane katrina situation. My idea was to digg out all of the land and build a huge floating city on a raft of some sort. But I know that this is impossible but would be really cool to do! We also discussed the topic of how the people in New Orleans had no idea that the hurricane would end up to being a catagory 5 hurricane. The cities walls were only made to withstand a catagory 3 hurricane. So they obviously werent prepared. Somewhere within this class discussion, some one mentioned something about making the city with a huge water slide and slide into the city and most of them would die? so it was a pretty laid back class but we covered alot of ideas and information on ways to rebuild the city and stuff like that. I liked discussing things in class because i love to debate and brainstorm with others and share ideas :)

Global Warming Link!

http://www.globalwarming.org/

Human Geo Class Happenings :/

Today in class i was tired. we finished the online test and it is below this entry. My group finished it and uploaded it to a flash drive. These are the things that we entered into our power point.......

Wheat, corn, sorghum, rice
Advancing- Geographic luck
Rice- It originated in china, in ten thousand years ago. It grows about 4 feet tall. Just like wheat, rice is an integral element around the world. Rice helped Chinas economy because it was and still is one of their main food eaten and sold there, as well as many other places in Asia. Wild rice can grow up to 10 feet in marshes, and is native to America.

Sorghum- It can grow up to 15 feet tall. It is grown in hot, aired places because it is resistant to droughts and heat naturally. How its made- Grains are mashed into pulp, boiled, then eaten. It has low protein but has lots of carbohydrates. Sorghum was originated by farmers in tropical niger- congo. It was the success of the African agricultural revolution.

NOTES! Human Geo 10/6/09

• Humans breaded animals so they did not have to hunt. This Is known as animal domestication. A good domesticated animal is one that has a baby each year. Goats and sheep were the first animals that were domesticated. Horses and oxen plowed land to plant more food.
1. Goats
2. Sheep
3. Pigs
4. Cows
5. Horses
6. Donkeys
7. Camels(two)
8. Water buffalo
9. Llamas
10. Reindeer
11. Yaks
12. Cattle(two)
• The ancestors of these animals are from Asia, north Africa, and Eurasia.
• Homes started to develop. They coated the walls in plaster. There were more people in the villages now. They made plaster from limestone. Learning to use fire was the next big part of technological advances in the world.
• People in New Guinea never advanced, because they took too much time feeding themselves.
• Europeans brought over their animals and food to the new world.

Questions:
In order to get the New Guineans into the 21 century, we need to go to them, and help them with their crops and give them more technology. They need to get into the 21 century because they need to keep up with our world and arent a third world country.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://joenov.blogspot.com/2009/10/notes-human-geo-10609.html' title='NOTES! When we did, we took notes on it and disscused it briefly. It was about people in a place called Papua New Guinea and it was awesome!
Here are the notes:)

Europeans have dominates for years because of their technologies. Such as gun, germs, and steel.

What Separates the Haves from the Have Not's?

Takes place in Papua new guinea

People have been living there for about 40,000 years. They want to know why we are so technologically advanced and places like Papua have so little. The people in new guinea are very smart, and know how to survive. The usa is the richest and dominates over the rest of the world.

Internet Failur During Test :(

Today in class, we took a test online about all of the information we have learned from the beginning of the year. I like this idea, because it was easy and convinent. We had problems with internet connection, which made it dificult to get started on the test. Some of the students did not even get onto the internet. This was frustrating because it shortened our time to take the test, and most did not finish. Our school has wireless internet access, and these problems should not occur so often, i think the wirless connection is not as reliable as others because most wirrless accesses dont fail so offten. These problems occur in most of the classrooms.

Globalization Chapter Test

“On my honor, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this graded academic work. I am a person of integrity and I do not cheat.” Agree to this statement by typing your name here: Joe Novak

Globalization is the increasing interconnectedness of people and places through converging processes of economic, political, and cultural change. Those who are pro-globalization believe that wealth will “trickle down” from rich countries to poor countries. They also believe it will spread the benefits of new ideas and new technologies to all nations. One organization that loans money to nations so they can invest in business is the IMF. On the other hand, those who are anti-globalization say it is not fair, because the richest 20% of the world’s people consume 86% of the world’s resources, resulting in inequalities between “haves” and “have nots.”

Use the CIA Factbook to answer the following questions: In Luxembourg the life expectancy is 79.33, the infant mortality rate is 4.56 deaths per 1000 live births, the literacy rate is 100%, and the TFR is 1.78. In Libya the life expectancy is 77.26 , the infant mortality rate is 21.05 deaths per 1000 live births, the literacy rate is 82.6, and the TFR is 3.08 .

We often categorize nations as being “developed” or “developing” nations. Vietnam and Mexico would be considered developing nations; Japan and Canada are developed nations.

The current world population is over 6,790,062,216 billion people. The number that measures how many children the average woman in a nation will bear is known as the Total Fertility Rate, which is abbreviated as TFR . When this number is exactly 2.1 , then the population stays the same; if it’s higher, the population goes up, and if it’s lower, the population decreases. The population is growing fastest in developing nations.

A population pyramid that is shaped just like a pyramid -- wide on the bottom and narrow at the top -- shows a country whose population is rapid growth. If it is shaped more like a vase or a soda bottle, that nation’s population is slow growth. young people are found at the bottom of the pyramid, and Men are found on the left hand side.

When discussing migration, people who are entering a country are known as immigrants, and people who are leaving a country are known as emigrants.

People leave their country for many reasons. An example of a push force is war, and an example of a pull force is better paying jobs . If a nation’s net migration rate is a negative number, it means more people are leaving the country than are arriving.

Globalization is greatly disputed. I think that there are good and bad sides to it. The middle argument is that globalization can improve our world, but does have its disadvantages. Globalization helps us to get to use more thing from other countries, and to trade with a variety of countries. The disadvanteges are that only the rich parts of the world are using the products that the poor parts are making. Some people say that the money will slowly trickle down to the less wealthy people and countries, but I disagree. I think that the poor countries will continue to be poor, because it is extremely hard to make money in a poor country when the U.S. is having trouble with employment and poverty. It is not as bad as in other countries, which is why so many people are trying to move to the united states. This will effect the population in other countries.

This article talked about how Mexican Immigrants want to move to the united states. After the test, we took notes and learned about Population Pyramids. Notes from this class are below.

Population Pyramids: Patterns for understanding

Wednesday, September 09, 2009
9:51 AM

Population Pyramids: Patterns for Understanding

Things to learn-
These pyramids can help human geographers to understand whether the population is going to go up or down. Learn how to analyze these pyramids.

Elements of the population pyramid
Age: population pyramids visually present the population of a particular country broken down by age.
Gender: Population pyramids are split. One side represents the number of males in a particular population; the other reflects the number of females within the same population.
Young and old populations: Percentage of population under age 15: global average is 30 percent, low is 17 percent(Europe); high of 42 percent (Africa); high number indicates great potential for future growth; percentage of population over age 65: identifies need for health care and other social services.
Life expectancy: the average number of years a person is expected to live. This is affected by many factors.

- Sweatshops

Sweatshops are basically factories where people assemble things like clothing, shoes, and similar products etc. The working conditions are crude.
